Nettle leaf tea is made from the dried leaves of Urtica dioica, one of the most mineral-rich herbs available. This certified organic stinging nettle tea has been a staple of traditional European herbal medicine for centuries, valued for its naturally high iron, calcium, and silica content. Once dried, the famous sting disappears entirely, leaving a smooth, earthy, slightly grassy tea that is as nourishing as it is versatile.
Key Benefits
- Mineral-rich: Nettle leaf is naturally high in iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and silica, making it one of the most nutritive herbal teas available.
- Traditional tonic: Traditionally used as a gentle spring tonic and cleansing herb to support overall wellbeing. Has a long history of use for seasonal comfort.
- Joint comfort: Traditionally used to help relieve symptoms of mild joint stiffness and discomfort.
- Hair and skin: Traditionally used as a hair rinse to support scalp health, and valued for its silica content which may support healthy hair and nails.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ensuring a clean, high-quality herb.
Tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried nettle leaf to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. The longer you steep, the more minerals are extracted. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily.
Nourishing infusion: For maximum mineral extraction, place a generous handful (about 30g) in a litre jar, fill with boiling water, cover, and steep for 4 to 8 hours or overnight. Strain and drink throughout the day. This method draws out significantly more iron and calcium than a quick tea.
Blends: Combines well with Peppermint for a refreshing flavour, Dandelion Leaf for a traditional cleansing blend, or Chamomile for a gentler evening tea.
The sting in fresh nettle comes from tiny hollow hairs (trichomes) on the leaves and stems. Each hair acts like a miniature hypodermic needle, injecting histamine, acetylcholine, and formic acid into the skin. Drying completely neutralises the sting, so dried nettle leaf is perfectly safe to handle.
In European folk tradition, nettle was considered a "spring cleansing" herb. People would make nettle soup or tea after winter to help shake off sluggishness and restore vitality. This tradition persists in many parts of Europe today.
May have a mild diuretic effect. Nettle leaf may interact with blood-thinning and blood pressure medications. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
