Organic cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum) are one of the world's most essential spices, with a warm, earthy, slightly nutty flavour that is fundamental to Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and North African cooking. These certified organic cumin seeds can be used whole or ground, toasted or raw, and bring depth and warmth to everything from curries and dhal to tacos and hummus. Cumin is also traditionally used in herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function.
Key Benefits
- Essential cooking spice: A kitchen staple across countless cuisines. Fundamental to Indian curries, Mexican tacos, Middle Eastern hummus, North African tagines, and European cheese and bread recipes.
- Digestive support: Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and European herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function and ease occasional bloating. The aromatic compounds naturally stimulate appetite and digestion.
- Toast for extra flavour: Dry-roasting whole cumin seeds in a hot pan for 1 to 2 minutes releases their essential oils and deepens the flavour dramatically. One of the simplest ways to improve your cooking.
- CCF tea tradition: Cumin is one of three spices in the Ayurvedic CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel), a classic digestive blend enjoyed after meals.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Cooking: Toast whole cumin seeds in a dry pan until fragrant (1 to 2 minutes), then grind or add whole to curries, dhal, rice, soups, and stews. Add at the start of cooking for deeper flavour.
CCF digestive tea: Combine equal parts cumin seeds with Coriander Seeds and Fennel Seeds. Lightly crush and steep in boiling water for 10 minutes. A classic Ayurvedic digestive blend.
Spice blends: Essential in garam masala, taco seasoning, baharat, ras el hanout, and chilli powder. Combine with Turmeric and Cinnamon for a warming curry base.
Cumin is not the same as caraway, despite looking similar. Cumin seeds are lighter in colour, slightly larger, and have a completely different flavour. In some European languages, the two names are confusingly similar (German "Kuemmel" is caraway, while cumin is "Kreuzkuemmel").
In medieval Europe, cumin was a symbol of fidelity. Guests at weddings carried cumin seeds in their pockets, and soldiers were given cumin loaves by their partners before departing for war. The ancient Egyptians used it in mummification.
