Californian poppy tea (Eschscholzia californica) is a gentle, non-addictive herb traditionally used to support restful sleep and ease nervous tension. This certified organic californian poppy is not related to the opium poppy and contains no opiates whatsoever. Instead, it contains its own unique group of mild sedative alkaloids that support relaxation without the risks associated with stronger sleep herbs. California poppy tea has a mild, slightly grassy flavour.

Key Benefits

  • Natural sleep support: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to promote restful sleep and help with occasional sleeplessness. A gentle option that is non-addictive and non-habit-forming.
  • Calming and relaxing: Traditionally used to ease nervous tension, restlessness, and mild anxiety. Suitable for use during the day in smaller amounts without causing heavy drowsiness.
  • Not an opiate: Despite being a member of the poppy family, Californian poppy contains zero opiates. Its gentle calming effects come from isoquinoline alkaloids (californidine, eschscholtzine) that work through entirely different pathways.
  • Child-friendly tradition: Historically considered gentle enough for children (with appropriate dosage guidance from a practitioner). One of the milder sedative herbs available.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Sleep tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried Californian poppy to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink 30 to 60 minutes before bed. For a stronger sleep blend, combine with Passionflower and Valerian Root.

Daytime calming tea: Use a lighter infusion (1 teaspoon per cup, steeped 5 to 10 minutes) for daytime nervous tension without heavy sedation. Blends well with Chamomile and Lemon Balm.

The Californian poppy is the state flower of California and was named after Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, a surgeon and naturalist on a Russian expedition who first collected it in 1815. Spanish colonists called it "copa de oro" (cup of gold) for its brilliant orange blooms.

California poppy is not the same as opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). It belongs to a different genus entirely and produces completely different compounds. It is legal, non-addictive, and safe for general use.
