Coltsfoot tea (Tussilago farfara) is one of the oldest known respiratory herbs in traditional Western herbalism. The dried coltsfoot leaf produces a mild, slightly bitter infusion that has been traditionally used for centuries to soothe occasional coughs and support comfortable breathing. The botanical name itself reflects this traditional use: "Tussilago" derives from the Latin "tussis," meaning cough. Coltsfoot benefits are primarily associated with respiratory comfort, making this a valued addition to the herbal cupboard during the cooler months.

Key Benefits

  • Respiratory comfort: Traditionally used to help soothe occasional dry or irritating coughs and support clear breathing. The best-known coltsfoot benefit.
  • Throat soothing: Traditionally used to help ease mild throat irritation and discomfort. The mucilage content provides a gentle coating action.
  • Seasonal wellness: Traditionally used as a winter wellness herb to support respiratory comfort during the cooler months.
  • Rich in mucilage: Coltsfoot leaf contains natural polysaccharides that produce a soothing, demulcent infusion.
  • Historical herb: One of the most historically documented respiratory herbs, with a continuous tradition of use spanning over 2,000 years.

Coltsfoot tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried coltsfoot leaf to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 2 cups daily. Best used for short periods during acute respiratory discomfort rather than as a daily tea.

Blending: For a soothing respiratory blend, combine with Mullein, another traditional lung herb. Add Licorice Root for natural sweetness, or pair with Thyme for additional respiratory support.

The common name "coltsfoot" refers to the shape of the leaf, which resembles a young horse's hoof. Coltsfoot is unusual among plants because the bright yellow flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge, earning it the folk name "son before the father."

Coltsfoot is not recommended for pets. Keep dried coltsfoot herb away from dogs and cats as a precaution.
