Frankincense resin (Boswellia carteri) is one of the most ancient and revered aromatic substances in the world. These natural resin tears have a warm, balsamic, slightly citrusy fragrance that has been used for thousands of years in spiritual practice, meditation, and traditional wellness. Burn the frankincense on charcoal for a cleansing, grounding aroma, or use it in herbal preparations. The resin contains boswellic acids and terpenes that have attracted significant interest in modern research.
Key Benefits
- Ancient aromatic resin: Used for over 5,000 years in religious ceremonies, meditation, and traditional wellness. The warm, balsamic fragrance is deeply grounding and calming.
- Traditional wellness: Traditionally used to support joint comfort and healthy respiratory function. Contains boswellic acids, which are the subject of ongoing research.
- Meditation and mindfulness: One of the most popular resins for burning during meditation, yoga, and spiritual practice. Creates a warm, contemplative atmosphere.
- Versatile use: Burn on charcoal as incense, infuse into oils, add to balms, or simmer gently in water for a fragrant steam.
- Natural and unprocessed: Pure resin tears, just as they come from the tree. No additives, binders, or synthetic fragrances.
Burning: Light a charcoal disc in a heat-safe burner and wait until it is glowing and covered in grey ash. Place 2 to 3 small pieces of frankincense resin on the charcoal. The resin will melt and release its aromatic smoke. Use in a well-ventilated room.
Infused oil: Gently warm frankincense resin in a carrier oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond) over very low heat for several hours. Strain and use as a massage oil or base for balms. Combines well with Myrrh for a classic aromatic blend, or with Lavender for a calming preparation.
Steam: Add a few pieces of resin to a bowl of just-boiled water and inhale the steam gently. Traditionally used for respiratory comfort. Can also be combined with Rosemary for a bracing aromatic steam.
Frankincense was one of the three gifts brought to the infant Jesus by the Magi, alongside gold and myrrh. It was considered as valuable as gold in the ancient world and was a key commodity on the famous incense trade routes of the ancient world.
The resin is harvested by making small cuts in the bark of Boswellia trees. The milky sap seeps out and hardens into "tears" over about two weeks. The trees are sustainably tapped, similar to rubber trees, and can produce resin for decades.
Burn in well-ventilated areas only. Keep resin smoke away from pets, especially birds. Not recommended for internal use during pregnancy. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
