Myrrh resin from Commiphora myrrha (syn. C. mol-mol) is an aromatic gum resin that has been valued for thousands of years across cultures for its warm, balsamic fragrance and traditional uses. This wildcrafted myrrh comes as irregular, reddish-brown resin pieces that can be burned as incense, made into tinctures, or used in natural mouthwash preparations. It pairs beautifully with Frankincense for a classic, grounding fragrance blend.
Key Benefits
- Incense and fragrance: Burns with a warm, earthy, slightly balsamic aroma. One of the oldest known incense resins, used in spiritual and meditative practices across many cultures.
- Tincture making: A popular base for homemade herbal tinctures. Myrrh resin dissolves well in high-proof alcohol to create a concentrated extract.
- Oral care: Traditionally used in herbal mouthwash and gargle preparations. Myrrh tincture diluted in warm water has been used as a natural mouth rinse for centuries.
- Rich in bioactive compounds: Contains sesquiterpenes, resin acids, and volatile oils that contribute to its distinctive aroma and traditional properties.
- Wildcrafted: Harvested from wild trees using traditional tapping methods, where the bark is scored and the resin collected as it dries naturally.
Burning as incense: Light a charcoal disc in a heatproof dish or incense burner. Wait until the disc is glowing and covered with grey ash (about 5 minutes), then place a few small pieces of myrrh resin on top. The resin will smoulder and release fragrant smoke. Combine with Frankincense for the classic pairing, or try adding dried Lavender for a softer, floral note.
Tincture: Crush or grind the resin pieces and combine 1 part myrrh to 5 parts high-proof alcohol (90% ethanol or overproof vodka). Seal in a glass jar and steep for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking regularly. Strain through muslin. The resulting tincture can be diluted in warm water as a mouth rinse.
Mouthwash: Add 5 to 10 drops of myrrh tincture to half a glass of warm water. Swish for 30 seconds, then spit. Do not swallow.
Myrrh was one of the three gifts brought to the infant Jesus by the Magi, alongside gold and frankincense. Its use as a sacred incense and embalming resin dates back over 5,000 years to the ancient world, where it was used in temple rituals and mummification.
The word "myrrh" comes from the Arabic word "murr," meaning "bitter," a reference to the resin's sharp, slightly medicinal taste.
Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils found in resins. Burn myrrh incense in well-ventilated areas and keep resin pieces stored away from pets.
