Dried licorice root tea from Glycyrrhiza glabra is one of the most widely used herbs in both Western and traditional herbal systems. This certified organic licorice root has a distinctive natural sweetness, around 50 times sweeter than sugar, making it a favourite for blending with other herbs. Licorice root tea is traditionally used to support healthy digestive function and soothe the throat, and its licorice root benefits have been valued for thousands of years.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to support healthy digestive function and help relieve symptoms of mild upper digestive tract discomfort. Valued in both Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal traditions.
  • Throat soothing: Traditionally used as a demulcent herb to help relieve coughs and soothe sore throats. The naturally sweet, coating quality of the root makes it ideal for winter teas.
  • Natural sweetener: Add a small piece to any herbal tea blend for natural sweetness without sugar. Licorice root is the ultimate blending herb, improving the taste of bitter or earthy teas.
  • Herbal harmoniser: Known in Chinese medicine as the "Great Harmoniser," licorice root appears in around 60% of all traditional Chinese prescriptions, valued for its ability to enhance other herbs in a formula.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which is especially important for root crops that can accumulate soil contaminants.

Decoction: Because this is a dried root, it needs simmering rather than steeping. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to a cup of water, bring to a gentle simmer, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. No sweetener needed.

Blending: Add a small piece or half a teaspoon to any herbal blend for natural sweetness. Works beautifully with Peppermint for digestive comfort, Chamomile for a soothing evening tea, or Marshmallow Root for a demulcent throat-soothing blend.

Cold brew: Place 1 to 2 teaspoons in cold water overnight in the fridge for a mellow, naturally sweet brew. Excellent on its own or mixed with ginger for a refreshing summer drink.

Archaeologists found a large quantity of well-preserved licorice root in the tomb of Tutankhamun, where it was placed as an offering to the gods. Alexander the Great's armies carried it during campaigns, believing it helped soldiers stay hydrated on long marches.

Australia has its own native licorice species, Glycyrrhiza acanthocarpa, first described by botanist John Lindley in 1838. Its leaves smell strongly of licorice when crushed.
