Marshmallow root tea (Althea officinalis) is one of the most soothing herbs in the traditional herbal toolkit. This certified organic dried marshmallow root is rich in natural mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats and soothes irritated tissues. The marshmallow root benefits have been valued for thousands of years, and it remains one of the most popular herbs for supporting digestive comfort, throat health, and overall wellbeing. The tea has a mild, slightly sweet flavour with a pleasant, silky mouthfeel.
Key Benefits
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to help soothe the digestive tract and ease mild stomach discomfort. The marshmallow root tea benefits are largely due to its high mucilage content, which forms a protective coating.
- Throat soothing: Traditionally used to help relieve dry, irritated throats and support respiratory comfort. A classic choice during the cooler months.
- Mucilage rich: Contains up to 35% natural mucilage polysaccharides, along with flavonoids and phenolic acids.
- Certified organic: Dried root pieces grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
- Gentle and versatile: Mild enough for regular use. Can be brewed as a hot tea or prepared as a cold infusion for maximum mucilage extraction.
Hot infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried marshmallow root to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and enjoy. The longer the steep, the thicker and more soothing the infusion.
Cold infusion (maximum mucilage): Place 1 tablespoon of dried marshmallow root in a jar with 500ml of cold water. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight (8 to 12 hours). Strain and drink throughout the day. Cold water extracts more mucilage than hot.
Blending: Pairs well with Chamomile for a soothing digestive blend. For throat comfort, try combining with Licorice Root. Also lovely blended with Ginger Root for a warming winter tea.
The original marshmallow confection was made from the root of this plant. French confectioners whipped the mucilaginous sap with sugar and egg whites to create the soft, pillowy sweet. Today's marshmallows use gelatin instead, but the name lives on.
The genus name Althea comes from the Greek "altho," meaning "to soothe." Marshmallow root is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats and is sometimes included in pet digestive supplements.
