Stevia powder (Stevia rebaudiana) is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener made from the dried, ground leaves of the stevia plant. This certified organic stevia leaf powder is the whole-leaf form, which has a green colour and is around 30 to 40 times sweeter than sugar. Unlike processed white stevia extracts, whole-leaf stevia powder retains the full range of the plant's natural compounds and has a more complex flavour profile with subtle herbal notes.
Key Benefits
- Natural zero-calorie sweetener: Approximately 30 to 40 times sweeter than sugar with zero calories. A tiny amount goes a long way. Use a pinch in place of a teaspoon of sugar.
- Whole-leaf powder: This is the whole dried leaf, ground to a fine green powder. More natural and less processed than the refined white stevia extracts found in supermarkets.
- Versatile in the kitchen: Add to tea, coffee, smoothies, baking, sauces, and desserts. Particularly useful for reducing sugar in recipes without artificial sweeteners.
- Herbal heritage: The Guarani people of Paraguay have used stevia leaves to sweeten their yerba mate for over 1,500 years.
- Certified organic: Ground from certified organic stevia leaves.
Sweetening tea: Add a tiny pinch (about one-eighth of a teaspoon) to a cup of tea. Stir well. Start with less than you think you need, as stevia is very concentrated. Works well in Chamomile, Peppermint, and other herbal teas.
Baking: Replace sugar with stevia powder at roughly a 1:30 ratio (1 teaspoon of stevia for every 30 teaspoons, or about 2/3 cup, of sugar). Note that stevia does not caramelise or provide bulk, so recipes may need adjustments.
Smoothies and drinks: Add a small pinch to smoothies, juices, or homemade lemonade for natural sweetness without calories.
Whole-leaf stevia powder has a green colour and a slightly different flavour profile from the refined white stevia products sold in supermarkets. It may have subtle herbal or liquorice-like undertones that some people enjoy and others prefer to mask by blending with other herbs.
Stevia is generally considered safe for dogs but should be kept away from pets in large quantities. It does not contain xylitol (a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs).
Generally recognised as safe (GRAS). People taking blood sugar or blood pressure medications should consult a healthcare provider before regular use, as stevia may enhance their effects. This information is not a substitute for medical advice.
