The Elder Tree Educational Medicine Garden

The Elder Tree is a grassroots not-for-profit organisation with a big goal: to build Australia's first dedicated herbal medicine school. Founded by herbalist Tatiana Dawn, The Elder Tree is working to put herbal knowledge back into the hands of everyday Australians.

Based in Mullumbimby on the NSW North Coast, The Elder Tree runs workshops, community gatherings, and Australia's most established herbal medicine podcast, with over 130 episodes featuring herbalists, growers, and educators from across the country.

The Educational Medicine Garden

In March 2026, The Elder Tree opened their Educational Medicine Garden at the Mullum Gardens Eco-Hub in Mullumbimby. This garden is a hands-on learning space where people can get to know medicinal plants up close, attend workshops, and build practical skills in herbal medicine.

Mudbrick Herb Cottage provided medicinal plants for the garden, helping to fill the beds with the herbs that students and visitors will learn from for years to come. It is a natural fit for us. We grow the plants, and The Elder Tree teaches people how to use them.

What they do

Beyond the garden, The Elder Tree is building a whole ecosystem for herbal education in Australia:

  • Workshops and gatherings covering herb spiral building, wildcraft weed walks, and plant medicine preparation
  • The Elder Tree Podcast with 130+ episodes interviewing herbalists across Australia
  • Community education making herbal knowledge accessible and affordable, including programs for low-income families
  • Long-term vision of a residential herbal medicine school with medicinal botanical gardens, teaching spaces, and apprenticeships

Our family has been growing herbs on the Gold Coast for over 30 years. The Elder Tree is making sure the knowledge of how to use those herbs does not get lost.
