Learn more about this collection

Chamomile is one of the most useful herbs you can grow. The two main types are German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), an annual that grows up to 60cm tall and produces masses of small daisy-like flowers, and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), a low-growing perennial with a sweet apple scent. German chamomile is the variety most commonly used for tea and is the species behind our dried chamomile tea.

Our Lawn Chamomile is a non-flowering form of Roman chamomile bred specifically as a ground cover. It stays low and dense, handles light foot traffic, and releases a lovely scent when walked on. It works well between pavers, along pathways, or as a small lawn alternative. For something different, Dyers Chamomile produces bright yellow flowers traditionally used for natural dyeing.

All four chamomile plants are grown organically at our nursery and shipped in 50 x 75mm tubes via Express Post to most Australian states. We also carry Chamomile German Blue Essential Oil, which is steam-distilled from the flowers and traditionally used in skincare and aromatherapy. Frequently asked questions

Does chamomile grow in pots or in the ground?

Both. German chamomile does well in pots at least 20cm across with good drainage. Roman and Lawn Chamomile prefer the ground where they can spread as a ground cover, but they also work in shallow pots and troughs. All types need full sun and well-drained soil.

Does chamomile come back every year?

It depends on the type. Roman Chamomile and Lawn Chamomile are perennials and will come back year after year. German Chamomile is an annual, but it self-seeds freely so you will often get new plants appearing each spring without replanting.

What is the difference between German and Roman chamomile?

German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is a taller annual that produces more flowers, making it the best choice for harvesting chamomile tea. Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a low-growing perennial that works as ground cover or a lawn substitute. Both have a similar apple-like scent and are traditionally used in herbal teas and skincare.

How long does chamomile take to flower?

German chamomile typically flowers 6 to 8 weeks after planting, making it one of the quicker herbs to produce blooms. Roman chamomile flowers in its first summer and continues each year after that. Pick flowers regularly to encourage more blooms throughout the growing season.

Is chamomile easy to grow in Australia?

Very easy. Chamomile loves the warm, sunny conditions found across most of eastern Australia. It handles heat well and is not fussy about soil as long as drainage is good. It does best planted in spring or early autumn. See our herb garden guide for more growing tips.

Can I make tea from fresh chamomile flowers?

Yes. Pick the flowers when they are fully open, rinse gently, and steep a small handful in boiling water for 5 minutes. Fresh chamomile tea has a lighter, sweeter flavour than dried. If you prefer the convenience of dried flowers, our organic chamomile tea is certified organic and ready to brew.
