Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chasteberry or vitex berry, is one of the most well-researched herbs for women's hormonal health. These certified organic dried berries have been traditionally used for centuries to support a healthy menstrual cycle and may help relieve symptoms of premenstrual tension. Chaste tree berry works best when taken consistently over several months, and is prepared as a decoction (simmered, not steeped) to draw out its active compounds.
Key Benefits
- Hormonal balance: Traditionally used to support normal hormonal function in women. One of the most clinically studied herbs in this area, with research supporting its traditional use for premenstrual symptoms.
- Menstrual cycle support: May help support a regular, healthy menstrual cycle. Traditionally used by herbalists to support normal luteal phase function.
- Long tradition of use: Used in Western herbal medicine for over 2,000 years. The name "chaste tree" reflects its historical use in monasteries.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ensuring a clean product for long-term use.
- Gentle, cumulative action: Works gradually over time. Most herbalists recommend consistent use for at least 3 months to see the full benefits.
Decoction: Lightly crush 1 teaspoon of chaste tree berries (a mortar and pestle works well) and add to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink once daily, preferably in the morning. The flavour is mildly peppery.
Blending: Combines well with Dong Quai Root for a traditional women's tonic blend, or with Red Clover for broader hormonal support. Adding Chamomile can soften the flavour and add a calming note.
The name "agnus-castus" literally means "chaste lamb." In ancient times, the berries were used by monks as a pepper substitute, and the tree was planted in monastery gardens. It became associated with chastity, which is how it got its common name.
Chaste tree is not toxic to dogs or cats according to the ASPCA. However, as with any herb, keep dried berries stored safely away from pets.
