Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chasteberry or vitex berry, is one of the most well-researched herbs for women's hormonal health. The name "agnus-castus" literally means "chaste lamb." In ancient times, the berries were used by monks as a pepper substitute, and the tree was planted in monastery gardens. It became associated with chastity, which is how it got its common name.
Chaste tree is not toxic to dogs or cats according to the ASPCA. However, as with any herb, keep dried berries stored safely away from pets.
