Roasted chicory root (Cichorium intybus) is one of the most satisfying caffeine-free coffee alternatives available. These certified organic roots are roasted to produce a dark, full-bodied brew with a rich, earthy flavour and a naturally sweet, slightly bitter finish. Traditionally valued in European and Ayurvedic herbalism as a digestive bitter, chicory root is also one of the richest natural sources of inulin, a prebiotic fibre that may support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

Key Benefits

  • Caffeine-free coffee alternative: Produces a dark, rich brew that closely mimics coffee in colour, body, and ritual, without any caffeine. Ideal for evening drinking or for those looking to cut back on coffee.
  • Rich in prebiotic fibre: Chicory root is one of nature's richest sources of inulin, a soluble fibre that may support healthy gut bacteria and digestive comfort.
  • Digestive bitter: Traditionally used in European herbalism to support healthy digestion and bile flow. Known since ancient times as a "friend of the liver."
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers for a cleaner cup.
  • Versatile brewing: Enjoy straight, blended with coffee to reduce caffeine, or mixed with other herbal roots for a custom caffeine-free blend.

Chicory coffee: Add 2 teaspoons of roasted chicory root to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then strain. Enjoy black for a bold brew, or add milk and a pinch of cinnamon for a New Orleans-style cafe au lait. Also works well in a French press or stovetop percolator.

Coffee blending: Mix chicory root with your regular coffee at a 1:3 or 1:1 ratio to reduce caffeine while adding depth and body. Start with less chicory and adjust to taste.

Herbal coffee blend: Combine with Roasted Dandelion Root in equal parts for a rich, caffeine-free brew with complementary earthy flavours. Add Cinnamon or Ginger Root for warmth and spice.

Chicory coffee has a long and colourful history. During Napoleon's trade blockade of the early 1800s, the French turned to roasted chicory root when coffee became scarce. The tradition stuck, and it eventually crossed the Atlantic to New Orleans, where Cafe Du Monde has been serving chicory cafe au lait since 1862.

In European folklore, chicory's vivid blue flowers were called "blue sailors," after a legend of a maiden whose eyes watched the horizon for her sailor to return. The 2nd-century Greek physician Galen called the plant a "friend of the liver."

Those with allergies to plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae) should use with caution. Start with small amounts, as the inulin fibre may cause temporary bloating as your gut adjusts.
