Crampbark (Viburnum opulus), also known as cramp bark, is one of the most specific herbs in the Western herbal tradition for muscle cramp and spasm relief. This dried bark has been used for centuries to ease muscular tension, support menstrual comfort, and soothe cramping. As a dried crampbark, it needs simmering into a cramp bark tea (decoction) rather than steeping to release its active compounds.

Key Benefits

  • Muscle cramp relief: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help relieve muscle cramps and spasms. The name says it all: this is the go-to herb for cramping.
  • Menstrual comfort: Traditionally used to support comfort during menstruation and help relieve period cramps. Often combined with other women's wellness herbs for monthly support.
  • Muscular tension: Traditionally used to help relieve general muscular tension, tightness, and discomfort. May be particularly helpful after physical exertion.
  • Decoction herb: As a dried bark, cramp bark requires gentle simmering for 15 to 20 minutes to extract its beneficial compounds effectively.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried cramp bark to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily as needed. The flavour is mild and slightly bitter.

Menstrual blend: Simmer cramp bark with Ginger Root for warmth, then add Chamomile after removing from heat for a soothing period comfort tea.

Muscle tension blend: Combine with Valerian Root for a stronger muscle-relaxing decoction. Add Passionflower after simmering for additional calming support.

Viburnum opulus is also known as the guelder rose and is closely related to black haw (Viburnum prunifolium), which has similar traditional uses. In Russia and Ukraine, the guelder rose is a national symbol and its bright red berries feature in folk songs and embroidery.

Cramp bark is not well studied for pet safety. As with any herbal product, keep out of reach of animals and consult a veterinarian before giving herbal preparations to pets.

People with aspirin sensitivity should use caution as cramp bark contains salicin. Not recommended during pregnancy without professional guidance.
