Goats rue (Galega officinalis) is a traditional European herb best known for its long history of use as a galactagogue, supporting breast milk production in nursing mothers. This certified organic goats rue makes a mild goats rue tea with a, slightly bitter, bean-like flavour. The plant is also historically significant as the original source of the guanidine compounds that led to the development of the diabetes medication metformin.

Key Benefits

  • Lactation support: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy breast milk production. One of the most well-known galactagogue herbs, with a history stretching back centuries.
  • Blood sugar support: Traditionally used to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels within the normal range. The plant's guanidine compounds are the historical precursors to modern blood sugar medications.
  • General tonic: Traditionally used as a gentle tonic herb to support overall wellbeing and vitality.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Tea infusion: Add 1 teaspoon of dried goats rue to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. The flavour is mild and slightly bitter.

Lactation blend: Combine goats rue with Fennel Seed and Nettle Leaf for a traditional nursing mother's tea. Add Peppermint or Lemon Balm for flavour.

Goats rue's most remarkable legacy is its connection to modern medicine. In the early 20th century, researchers found that the plant's guanidine compounds could lower blood sugar. This eventually led to the development of metformin, now one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world.

The name "goats rue" comes from the old belief that the plant increased milk yield in goats. The fresh plant is toxic to livestock, but the dried herb is considered safe for human use at recommended doses.

May interact with blood sugar medications (including metformin and insulin). Nursing mothers should consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider before use. Not recommended during pregnancy. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
