Sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella) is a tangy, mineral-rich herb best known as one of the four ingredients in the traditional Essiac tea formula. Sheep sorrel gets its tangy flavour from oxalic acid, the same compound found in rhubarb stalks and spinach. While this makes it refreshing in moderate amounts, people with a history of kidney stones should avoid large quantities.
The name "sheep sorrel" comes from its popularity with grazing sheep, who seek it out in pastures. It is a common wild plant found across temperate regions worldwide, including Australia.
