Essiac is a traditional four-herb herbal tea with a long history of use, made to the formula popularised by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse (Essiac is her surname spelled backwards) and rooted in Ojibwa tradition. Ours brings together the four herbs of the original recipe: burdock root, sheep sorrel including the roots, slippery elm bark and turkey rhubarb root.

Key Benefits

  • The original four-herb formula - made to Rene Caisse's traditional recipe, with nothing added or left out.
  • Whole sheep sorrel, including the roots - we use the whole plant including the roots, as the traditional blend calls for.
  • A long history of traditional use - Essiac has been enjoyed as a herbal tonic tea for generations.
  • Certified organic - carefully sourced and blended from quality dried herbs.
  • Makes a generous batch - the 120g pack brews around 4 litres and the 240g pack around 8 litres, so a little goes a long way.
  • Simple to make at home - full preparation instructions are enclosed with every pack.

Each 60g bag makes about 2 litres of tea. Bring 2 litres of water to a rolling boil, stir in one 60g bag, replace the lid and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, stir well, then leave covered to cool undisturbed for 12 hours or overnight. Reheat until steaming (do not let it boil), let the herbs settle, then strain through a sieve and bottle into sterilised glass. Store in the refrigerator. Avoid aluminium and plastic when brewing. Essiac is traditionally taken as a small daily serving, and full instructions are enclosed with every pack.

The blend is named after Canadian nurse Rene Caisse, who shared the four-herb recipe from the 1920s onwards. The 120g pack contains 2 x 60g bags (about 4 litres of tea) and the 240g pack contains 4 x 60g bags (about 8 litres).

The cut dried burdock root can sometimes look a little 'cobwebby' from the fibrous inner pith. This is completely normal and does not affect the quality of the blend.

There are no preservatives, so keep the brewed tea refrigerated and discard it if any mould develops. When in doubt, throw it out. Do not freeze or microwave it; warm it gently with a little hot water instead.

Not suitable during pregnancy. No conclusive clinical evidence exists that Rene Caisse's herbal formula will alleviate, cure or prevent any disease or condition, and we make no such claim. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
