Learn more about this collection

Growing your own Asian herbs at home means you always have the freshest ingredients on hand, picked minutes before cooking. Many of these herbs lose their aroma quickly after harvest, so shop-bought bunches rarely compare to what you can grow yourself. Our subtropical Gold Coast nursery is the perfect proving ground for these warmth-loving plants, and most varieties settle in beautifully across Queensland, New South Wales and other warm regions of Australia.

The Vietnamese mint plant is one of our best sellers and for good reason. It grows vigorously in moist, partially shaded spots and produces peppery, aromatic leaves perfect for laksa, salads and rice paper rolls. Pair it with Lemongrass, which forms handsome clumps in full sun and provides stalks for curries, soups and teas all year round.

For Thai cooking, Thai Basil and Thai Holy Basil are essential. Indian cuisine calls for Curry Leaf Tree and the wonderful Tulsi varieties, including Tulsi Krishna and Tulsi Rama. For the adventurous cook, Galangal, Kencur and Krachai bring the rhizome flavours of Indonesia and Thailand straight from the garden.

Most Asian herb plants love warmth, humidity and rich soil. Plant them in a sheltered spot with morning sun and afternoon shade for best results. Many also grow happily in large pots, making them ideal for balconies and courtyards. All our plants are grown organically and shipped Australia-wide via Express Post (excluding WA, NT and TAS due to quarantine). Frequently asked questions

Which Asian herbs grow best in Australia?

Vietnamese mint, lemongrass, Thai basil, galangal, turmeric, curry leaf tree and Tulsi basil all thrive in Australia's warm climate. Most do best in subtropical and tropical regions, though gardeners in temperate areas can grow many of them in pots brought undercover during winter. Our Gold Coast nursery grows every variety we sell, so they are well suited to Australian conditions.

How do I grow a Vietnamese mint plant at home?

Vietnamese mint is one of the easiest Asian herbs to grow. It prefers a moist, partially shaded position with rich soil. Plant it in a pot or garden bed, water regularly and harvest by snipping stems as needed. It spreads readily, so a pot is a good option if you want to contain it. It grows year-round in warm climates and bounces back quickly after picking.

Can I grow lemongrass in a pot in Australia?

Yes, lemongrass grows well in a large pot of at least 30cm diameter. Use quality potting mix, place the pot in a sunny spot and water regularly. Lemongrass is a clumping grass that can grow quite tall, so give it room. Harvest stalks by cutting or twisting them off at the base when they reach about 1 to 2cm thick.

What is the difference between Thai basil and holy basil?

Thai basil has smooth, slightly glossy leaves with a sweet anise flavour and is often used in stir-fries, curries and salads. Thai holy basil (Krapao) has slightly serrated leaves with a spicier, more peppery flavour and is the key herb in pad krapao. Both grow well in warm Australian gardens and are essential for authentic Thai cooking.

Do you ship Asian herb plants to all states?

We ship live plants via Express Post to most states, but unfortunately cannot send to Western Australia, Northern Territory or Tasmania due to quarantine restrictions on live plant material. Orders to all other states typically arrive within 1 to 2 business days.
