Botanical Name: Gynura crepioides

Okinawan spinach is native to Indonesia and Japan. It also goes by the names Hong tsoi, Okinawa lettuce.


A low growing perennial plant to approx 70cm high. Okinawa spinach has yellow/orange thistle-like flowers. The leaves are green on top and purple underneath.


Will grow in full sun to part shade likes regular water during extreme heat. It will tolerate most soil types.


It loves tropical areas but will grow well in the subtropics and some temperate areas if protected during winter.


The leaves make a colourful addition to salads and sandwiches. Can be cooked lightly in a stir-fry or rice dish. In Japan, the leaves are dipped in batter and fried and served as Tempura.


The leaves are rich in protein, iron, potassium, calcium, vitamin A. The medicinal uses could be similar to Sambung but the research and reports from people about the benefits for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol is for the Sambung Gynura Procumbens.
