Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), meaning "sacred bark" in Spanish, is a well-known herbal laxative with a long history of use by Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest. This dried cascara bark contains naturally occurring anthraquinones that support bowel regularity. Cascara is a decoction herb and should only be used for short-term relief of occasional constipation.

Key Benefits

  • Bowel regularity: Traditionally used as a gentle stimulant laxative to support regular bowel movements and relieve occasional constipation. Effects typically occur within 6 to 12 hours.
  • Traditional heritage: Used for centuries by the Cascara, Quinault, and other Pacific Northwest peoples. The bark was one of the most widely used herbal laxatives in both traditional and Western pharmacy throughout the 20th century.
  • Milder than senna: Cascara sagrada is traditionally considered one of the gentler herbal laxatives, producing a softer bowel movement with less cramping than stronger alternatives.
  • Short-term use: Designed for occasional, short-term use only. Not for daily or long-term consumption.

Decoction: Add half to one teaspoon of dried cascara bark to a cup of water. Simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink before bed. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed. Effects are usually felt the following morning.

Ease cramping: Combine cascara with Ginger Root or Peppermint to help ease any stomach griping. Licorice Root adds natural sweetness and may help moderate the action.

Spanish colonists named the tree "cascara sagrada" (sacred bark) after learning of its medicinal use from indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The bark must be aged for at least one year after harvest before use, as fresh bark is too harsh and can cause severe griping and nausea.

Cascara was listed in the US Pharmacopoeia from 1890 to 2002 and was one of the most commonly used over-the-counter laxatives for much of the 20th century.

For short-term occasional use only (maximum 1 to 2 weeks). Not for daily use. Do not use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for children. Avoid with inflammatory bowel conditions or bowel obstruction. May cause electrolyte imbalance with prolonged use. This information is not a substitute for medical advice.
