Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is best known in Western herbal medicine for its traditional use in supporting comfort from mild headaches when taken regularly over time. This dried feverfew herb has a distinctly bitter taste and is traditionally taken daily as a preventative rather than as a one-off remedy. Feverfew tea is prepared as a simple infusion and is often blended with milder-tasting herbs.

Key Benefits

  • Headache support: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help relieve mild headaches and head tension when taken regularly. Best results are seen with consistent daily use over several weeks.
  • Preventative approach: Unlike many herbs used for immediate relief, feverfew is traditionally taken daily as a preventative measure, building its effect over time.
  • Contains parthenolide: The key active compound, parthenolide, is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been the subject of considerable research interest.
  • Joint comfort: Traditionally used to support joint comfort and ease occasional stiffness.

Daily tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried feverfew to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink once daily. The flavour is quite bitter. Add honey and Peppermint to improve the taste.

Headache blend: Combine feverfew with Betony and Chamomile for a traditional head comfort tea. Take daily for best results.

The name "feverfew" comes from the Latin febrifugia, meaning "fever reducer," though the herb is now better known for head comfort support than for fever. It has been grown in English cottage gardens for centuries and was a common household remedy in medieval Europe.

Do not suddenly stop taking feverfew after long-term daily use, as some people experience a rebound effect. Taper off gradually over a week or two.

Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. People with allergies to the daisy family (Asteraceae) should avoid. May interact with blood-thinning medications. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
