Betony (Stachys officinalis) is one of the most revered herbs in the European herbal tradition. For over 2,000 years, this gentle nervine has been traditionally used to relieve tension headaches and support a calm, grounded state of mind. Betony tea has a mild, slightly bitter flavour with an earthy character that makes it pleasant to drink on its own or blended with other calming herbs.
Key Benefits
- Head tension relief: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to relieve tension headaches and head discomfort associated with stress. One of the oldest and most consistent uses recorded across centuries of herbalism.
- Nervous system support: Traditionally used as a nervine tonic to support mental calm and help relieve nervous tension. Valued as a grounding herb for busy, overthinking minds.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used as a mild bitter tonic to support healthy digestive function, particularly when digestive discomfort is linked to stress or tension.
- Gentle daily herb: Well tolerated and suitable for regular use. Makes an excellent base herb for custom blending with other nervines and relaxation herbs.
Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried betony to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. The mildly bitter flavour pairs well with a little honey.
Calming blend: Combine equal parts betony with Chamomile and Lemon Balm for a soothing evening tea. For a stronger nervine blend, add Skullcap or Passionflower.
Digestive support: Drink a cup of betony tea 20 to 30 minutes before meals to gently stimulate digestion.
Betony was so highly valued in the ancient world that a Roman physician wrote an entire book devoted to this single plant, listing nearly 47 different uses. An old Italian proverb advised selling your coat to buy betony.
In Anglo-Saxon England, betony was planted around churchyards and worn as an amulet for protection. The herb was considered so important that it appears repeatedly in the earliest English medical manuscripts alongside remedies for both physical ailments and supernatural afflictions.
