Gravel root (Eupatorium purpureum), also known as Joe Pye weed, is a traditional North American herb valued for its long history of use in supporting kidney and urinary tract health. This wildcrafted dried gravel root is a gravel root tea decoction herb that needs simmering to release its active compounds. The name "gravel root" directly references its traditional use in helping to ease the discomfort associated with urinary gravel and stones.

Key Benefits

  • Kidney and urinary support: Traditionally used in Native American and Western herbal medicine to support healthy kidney function and promote comfortable urination.
  • Traditional stone herb: The common name "gravel root" reflects centuries of traditional use in supporting the urinary tract during episodes of urinary gravel and discomfort.
  • Fluid balance: Traditionally used as a mild diuretic to support healthy fluid balance and the body's natural elimination processes.
  • Wildcrafted: Ethically gathered from wild populations in its native North American habitat.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried gravel root to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. Ensure adequate water intake throughout the day.

Kidney blend: Combine gravel root with Marshmallow Root for soothing demulcent support, and Dandelion Leaf for gentle diuretic action. Add Ginger Root for warmth.

The name "Joe Pye weed" honours a Native American healer named Joe Pye, who is said to have used the plant to help early European settlers through a typhus outbreak. The tall, pink-purple flower heads of this striking wetland plant can reach over two metres in height.

Gravel root belongs to the Eupatorium genus, which also includes boneset (E. perfoliatum). The two are different herbs with different traditional uses.
