Orris root powder from Iris germanica is a finely ground iris rhizome prized for its delicate violet-like scent and its ability to "fix" or preserve the fragrance of other ingredients. This makes it an essential ingredient in potpourri, pomander making, natural perfumery, and craft gin botanicals. The distinctive floral aroma develops during a lengthy ageing process of 3 to 5 years after harvest.

Key Benefits

  • Potpourri fixative: The primary use for orris root powder. It absorbs and holds the essential oils of other dried flowers and herbs, helping potpourri retain its fragrance for months rather than weeks.
  • Pomander making: A traditional ingredient in clove-studded orange pomanders. Roll the finished pomander in a mix of orris root powder and ground spices to preserve and enhance the scent.
  • Gin botanical: Used in small quantities as a botanical in craft gin distilling, where it adds a subtle floral, earthy depth and acts as a flavour fixative.
  • Natural perfumery: Valued in natural and DIY perfumery as both a fixative and a base note with a soft, powdery violet character.

Potpourri: Add 1 tablespoon of orris root powder per 2 cups of dried flower and herb mix. Toss through gently, then add a few drops of your chosen essential oil. Seal in a jar for 2 weeks to mature, shaking occasionally. Works beautifully with Lavender, Red Rose Petals, and Chamomile flowers.

Pomanders: Mix equal parts orris root powder and ground cinnamon (add ground cloves and nutmeg to taste). Roll clove-studded oranges in the mixture, then wrap in tissue paper and age in a dark, dry place for 4 to 6 weeks.

Perfume tincture: Steep 1 part orris root powder in 5 parts high-proof alcohol for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking regularly. Strain through fine muslin for a violet-scented perfume base.

Orris root is named after Iris, the ancient goddess of rainbows. The fleur-de-lis symbol used in heraldry across Europe is actually an iris flower, not a lily, and has been the emblem of Florence since the Middle Ages.

The violet scent of orris root does not exist in the fresh rhizome. It develops slowly during years of careful drying and ageing as chemical compounds in the root gradually oxidise into "irones," the molecules responsible for the violet aroma.

Primarily for external and fragrance use. May cause skin sensitivity in some people. Not recommended during pregnancy. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.

Rated 5 out of 5. Cinnamon and orris root, oh my!. Excellent. I made a pomander - lots of cloves covering an orange - and rolled it in a mix of the cinnamon and orris root. Wrapped up in calico and tied with a ribbon. The first one I made was over 40 years ago, and it's scent is still as fresh and invigorating !
