Botanical Name:Capsicum baccatuum

Chilli Omnicolour is a hybrid variety of chilli that was created by cross-breeding different types of peppers. This medium-sized chilli has a unique appearance, with various colours including yellow, orange, red, and purple. It has a conical shape and a moderate level of spiciness, with a heat level ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville heat units.

The origin of Chilli Omnicolour is not clear, but it is believed to have been developed in the United States. This chilli is easy to grow and produces a high yield of peppers, making it a popular choice among home gardeners.

Growing: Growing conditions for Chilli Omnicolour are similar to those for other chillies. It thrives in warm and sunny conditions and requires regular watering. The fruit starts off green and gradually changes colour as it ripens, with a range of colours, including yellow, orange, red, and purple, on the bush at once. The Chilli Omnicolour plant produces a high yield of chillies and fruits for most of the year, apart from a short period during winter.

Culinary uses:  Its unique appearance makes it an excellent addition to salads, salsa, and guacamole. It can also add a pop of colour and heat to sandwiches and wraps. The heat level of the chilli pairs well with cheese and meats, making it a great ingredient in pizzas, burgers, and tacos. Stir some through your scrambled eggs or cook with some breakfast mushrooms. In addition, the Chilli Omnicolour can be used to make hot sauce, chilli powder, and other spice blends.

Medicinal uses: Chillies like the Chilli Omnicolour have been used for centuries for their health benefits. Capsaicin, the compound that gives chilli their heat, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It is also thought to have anti-cancer and cardiovascular benefits. However, it is important to use chilli in moderation, as they can cause gastrointestinal distress in some people.

In the Garden: Chilli Omnicolour can be used as an ornamental plant. Its colourful peppers add a pop of colour to garden beds and containers. Additionally, the plant can be used as a natural pest deterrent, as the capsaicin in the peppers deters some pests.

Rated 5 out of 5. Love this plant. Perfect . After a year of growth my chilli is fruiting 💕 which is good because I love chilli in almost anything and this plant is a stunning one to look at and I admire it daily 💫 I also purchased another chilli from the Mudbrick Cottage (plus other herbs) who I planted in the ground rather than kept potted and it has been slower to grow than my potted Omni for anyone’s interest . Thank you 🙏 Cassii , January 2025.
