This aloe vera powder is the whole leaf of Aloe barbadensis, dried and milled, certified organic. Aloe has been the skin plant of every tradition that met it, and the powder form is made for the DIY bench: face masks, hair rinses, bath soaks and soap making, with the plant's cooling, film-forming character in a stable, scoopable form.

For a face mask, mix a teaspoon of powder with enough water, honey or plain yoghurt to make a paste, leave on for ten to fifteen minutes and rinse. For hair, whisk a teaspoon into a cup of warm water as a final rinse, or into a conditioner base. It also blends into home-made soaps, bath soaks and after-sun gels. Patch test first, as with any new cosmetic ingredient.

Whole-leaf powder is a different thing from inner-gel powder. The whole leaf includes the latex layer and its aloin, the bitter compound behind aloe's old reputation as a purgative, which is exactly why this powder belongs on your skin and hair rather than in your smoothie.
