Roasted carob powder (Ceratonia siliqua) is a certified organic, naturally sweet powder made from the roasted pods of the carob tree. With a warm, chocolatey flavour and gentle caramel sweetness, carob powder is a popular caffeine-free alternative to cocoa in baking, hot drinks, and smoothies. Unlike chocolate, carob contains no caffeine, no theobromine, and is naturally lower in fat, making it a gentler choice for those sensitive to stimulants.

Key Benefits

  • Chocolate alternative: Roasted carob powder has a warm, chocolatey flavour with natural sweetness, making it an excellent substitute for cocoa powder in most recipes.
  • Caffeine and theobromine free: Contains no stimulants at all, making it suitable for those who are sensitive to caffeine, for children, and for evening treats.
  • Naturally sweet: Carob is naturally sweeter than cocoa, so recipes using carob powder typically need less added sugar.
  • High in fibre: Contains 26 to 40 grams of dietary fibre per 100 grams, significantly higher than most food powders.
  • Rich in calcium: A natural source of calcium (300+ mg per 100g), along with iron, magnesium, and potassium. Certified organic.

Hot carob drink: Stir 1 to 2 tablespoons of carob powder into a cup of warm milk (dairy or plant-based). No sweetener needed for most tastes, but a drizzle of honey works well. For a richer drink, whisk the powder into a small amount of milk first to avoid lumps.

In baking: Substitute carob powder for cocoa powder at a 1:1 ratio in cakes, brownies, biscuits, and muffins. Reduce sugar in the recipe by roughly one-third, as carob is naturally sweeter than cocoa.

Smoothies: Add 1 tablespoon to smoothies for a chocolate-like flavour. Pairs well with banana, almond milk, and a spoonful of nut butter.

Blending: Try combining with Lavender for a soothing evening drink, or with Peppermint for a carob-mint treat. Ginger adds a warming kick to a hot carob drink.

The word "carat," used to measure the weight of gemstones, comes from the Greek word for carob seed ("kerátion"). Ancient gem traders used carob seeds as counterweights on their scales because they were believed to be remarkably uniform in size. The carat was standardised at 200 milligrams in 1907.

Unlike chocolate, carob powder is safe for dogs. It contains no theobromine or caffeine, making carob treats a popular choice among pet owners looking for a dog-safe chocolate alternative.
