Blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus) is a certified organic herb with a history stretching back to medieval European monasteries, where Benedictine monks cultivated it as a valued medicinal plant. Blessed thistle is one of the strongest-tasting bitter herbs available, traditionally used to stimulate appetite, support healthy digestion, and promote milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Not to be confused with St Mary's thistle (milk thistle), blessed thistle is a different plant with different uses.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive bitter: Traditionally used as a bitter tonic to stimulate appetite and support healthy digestion. Best taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals.
  • Lactation support: Traditionally used to support healthy milk production in breastfeeding mothers. One of the most well-known blessed thistle benefits alongside fenugreek.
  • Contains cnicin: The herb's key active compound is cnicin, a sesquiterpene lactone responsible for its intensely bitter taste and traditional uses.
  • Approved by German Commission E: Listed in the German Commission E monographs for loss of appetite and dyspepsia (digestive discomfort).
  • Certified organic: Organically grown aerials (leaf, stem, and flower) without synthetic chemicals.

Blessed thistle tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried blessed thistle to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 to 15 minutes, covered. The taste is very bitter. For digestive support, drink 15 to 30 minutes before meals. A small amount of honey can be added, though the bitterness is considered part of its therapeutic action.

For lactation: Traditionally paired with Fenugreek for a classic breastfeeding support combination. Also blends well with Raspberry Leaf as a nourishing postnatal tea.

Digestive blend: Combine with Chamomile or Peppermint to soften the bitterness while retaining the digestive benefits.

Shakespeare referenced blessed thistle in Much Ado About Nothing, where Margaret tells Beatrice to lay some to her heart for her lovesickness. The Latin name "benedictus" (blessed) reflects its reputation in monastery gardens as a cure for many ailments.

Blessed thistle is a different plant from St Mary's thistle (milk thistle). Blessed thistle has yellow flowers and hairy leaves, while St Mary's thistle has purple flowers and distinctive white-veined leaves. They have different active compounds and different traditional uses.

Do not use during pregnancy (uterine stimulant). High doses may cause nausea and vomiting. Those with allergies to plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae) should use with caution. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
