Buckthorn bark comes from Frangula alnus, a small European shrub whose bark has been used in herbal traditions since the Middle Ages. It is always aged before use, never taken fresh, and is prepared as a slow decoction rather than a quick cup of tea.

Barks need longer than leaves to give up their goodness, so buckthorn is simmered rather than steeped. Use around half a teaspoon of the cut bark per cup of cold water, bring it gently to a simmer, hold it there for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain well. Keep it to a single cup and to occasional use only.
Many people soften the taste with a little Ginger Root or Liquorice Root simmered alongside it. If you are after something gentler for everyday drinking, Roasted Dandelion Root is the far more relaxed option.
Alder buckthorn is thornless, despite the name, and its small berries turn from green through red to black on the same branch. Hedgerow lore says you can read the season in a single twig.
The wood had a second life entirely: buckthorn charcoal was once prized by gunpowder makers, and by artists, who still favour it for fine drawing charcoal today.
This is a herb where the ageing genuinely matters. Fresh bark was traditionally avoided altogether, and old herbals are unusually firm on the point.
