Echinacea root (Echinacea purpurea) is one of the most widely researched herbs for immune support. This certified organic echinacea root is the whole dried root, ready for simmering into a rich decoction or making into a tincture at home. Traditionally used by Native American peoples for centuries, echinacea root is now one of the most popular herbal immune support products worldwide.

Key Benefits

  • Immune support: Traditionally used to support healthy immune system function, particularly during the colder months. One of the most clinically studied herbs for immune support, with a growing body of research.
  • Cold and flu season: Traditionally used at the first sign of seasonal illness to support the body's natural defences.
  • Root form: Echinacea root contains a different compound profile to the aerial parts, with higher concentrations of alkylamides and polysaccharides. The root is the part most commonly used in traditional practice and commercial preparations.
  • Decoction herb: As a dried root, echinacea needs simmering rather than steeping to extract its active compounds fully. The resulting decoction has a distinctive tingling sensation on the tongue from the alkylamides.
  • Certified organic: Cultivated without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from E. purpurea, the most sustainably farmed echinacea species.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried echinacea root to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The tea has a distinctive tingling sensation on the tongue, which is a sign of the active alkylamides at work.

Immune blend: Simmer echinacea root with Ginger Root for a warming immune support tea. Add Elderflower after removing from heat for a classic cold and flu season blend. Astragalus Root makes an excellent long-term companion herb.

Tincture making: Pack a jar one-third full with chopped echinacea root, cover with vodka (40% alcohol), seal, and store in a dark place for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking daily.

The name "echinacea" comes from the Greek word for hedgehog, referring to the spiny central cone of the flower. Plains Indian peoples, including the Lakota and Cheyenne, used the root for snakebites, toothache, and sore throats long before it entered Western herbal medicine.

A tingling or numbing sensation on the tongue when you taste echinacea root is a good sign. It indicates the presence of alkylamides, the compounds most associated with echinacea's immune-supporting activity. If there is no tingle, the root may be old or of poor quality.

Not recommended for people with autoimmune conditions or progressive systemic diseases. People with allergies to the daisy family (Asteraceae) should avoid echinacea. Rated 5 out of 5. Very happy with the service!. So good, quickest delivery and easiest purchase I’ve had buying different sorts of dried roots/plants to make infusions. It would be great if they could stock some of the harder ones to get in Australia, I have to look in America and delivery takes up to 3 weeks. Anonymous , July 2024.

Rated 5 out of 5. Smells amazing!. Used Echinacea in elderberry syrup (also purchased from Mudbrick Herb cottage). Which I then made into gummies. Love the benefits it adds. Also love love the resealable packaging just makes it so much more easier to store. Rose Lui , May 2022.

Rated 5 out of 5. Echinacea Root - keep buying again. I have used echinacea Root from Mudbrick Cottage to make a glycerite and use it as a powder too when I need to stop a cold before it develops full-scale.I would love to be able to buy organic vegetable glycerine on this website too!
