Knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare) is a gentle, mineral-rich herb that has been used in European herbal medicine for centuries. This certified organic knotgrass has a mild, slightly astringent flavour and is traditionally used to support healthy urinary tract function and respiratory comfort. Rich in silicic acid and flavonoids, knotgrass tea is a quietly useful herb that deserves more attention.

Key Benefits

  • Urinary support: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy urinary tract function and promote comfortable urination.
  • Respiratory comfort: Traditionally used to support respiratory comfort and help soothe mild coughs and throat irritation.
  • Rich in silica: Knotgrass is a natural source of silicic acid (silica), a mineral traditionally valued for supporting healthy connective tissue, hair, skin, and nails.
  • Gentle astringent: The mild astringency of knotgrass makes it traditionally useful for supporting healthy mucous membranes throughout the body.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried knotgrass to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily.

Urinary blend: Combine knotgrass with Birch Leaf and Cornsilk for a gentle urinary support tea. Add Peppermint for flavour.

Silica blend: Pair with horsetail for a silica-rich tea traditionally used to support hair, skin, and nail health.

In Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Lysander tells Hermia she is "a dwarf" and refers to knotgrass, reflecting an old folk belief that knotgrass could stunt growth. The name "knotgrass" refers to the prominent swollen joints (nodes) along its stems.

Not to be confused with Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), which is a different, much larger invasive plant. Knotgrass is a small, low-growing plant commonly found along paths and in disturbed ground.
