Common mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a hardy, purple-flowered cousin of marshmallow, and these are its dried leaves and flowering tops, certified organic. Like marshmallow, mallow is rich in mucilage, so a cup of mallow tea is soft and slightly silky, with a mild, grassy flavour that is easy to drink every day.
Key Benefits
- Soothing for the throat: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine as a warm, soothing tea for a dry or scratchy throat.
- Gentle on digestion: Traditionally taken to calm and soothe the digestive tract.
- Mild and easy to drink: A soft, mellow flavour with none of the bitterness of many medicinal herbs, so it blends easily.
- A lighter cousin of marshmallow: Shares marshmallow's mucilage-rich, soothing character in a leafy, everyday tea.
- Certified organic: Organically grown leaves and flowering tops, cut for tea.
Mallow tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to a cup of just-boiled water, cover and steep for 10 minutes, then strain. A little honey suits it.
Cold infusion: For a thicker, silkier drink, steep 2 teaspoons in a cup of cool water for 2 to 4 hours, or overnight in the fridge, then strain. Cool water draws out the mucilage gently.
Blending: Pairs well with Chamomile for an evening cup, and with Licorice Root for a sweeter throat blend. For an even silkier tea, mix it with Marshmallow Leaf.
The name Malva is usually traced to the Greek word for soft, a nod to the plant's silky, soothing leaves. Common mallow has been eaten as a leafy green and brewed as a tea around the Mediterranean since Roman times.

The mucilage in mallow can slow the absorption of medicines taken at the same time, so leave an hour either side. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
