Neem leaf (Azadirachta indica) is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, where it has been used for thousands of years and is known as "the village pharmacy." This certified organic dried neem produces a distinctly bitter infusion traditionally valued for supporting healthy skin and digestive function. Rich in bioactive compounds including nimbin and quercetin, neem leaf is also widely used by organic gardeners as a natural garden spray.

Key Benefits

  • Ayurvedic tradition: One of the most revered herbs in Ayurveda, with documented use spanning over 3,000 years. Traditionally used to support healthy skin and the body's natural cleansing processes.
  • Digestive bitter: Traditionally used in Ayurvedic herbalism to support healthy digestion. The intensely bitter taste is considered a key part of its traditional action.
  • Natural garden spray: Neem leaf infusion is widely used by organic gardeners as a natural, biodegradable pest management solution. Safe for bees and beneficial insects when used as directed.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
  • Versatile preparation: Use as a herbal tea, topical skin wash, or garden spray, making it one of the most multi-purpose herbs available.

Neem tea: Add 1 teaspoon of dried neem leaf to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Neem tea is intensely bitter. Add honey and lemon, or blend with Tulsi or Ginger Root to make it more palatable.

Topical wash: Brew a strong infusion using 2 tablespoons per cup. Allow to cool completely, then use as a skin wash or add to bath water. Traditionally used in Ayurveda for topical skin care.

Garden spray: Steep a generous handful of dried neem leaf in a litre of boiling water for several hours or overnight. Strain thoroughly, dilute 1:5 with water, and spray on plants. Pairs well with Turmeric in traditional Ayurvedic formulas for internal use.

In India, neem is considered sacred and is often called "the village pharmacy" because nearly every part of the tree has a traditional use. The name comes from the Sanskrit "nimba," and the botanical name Azadirachta derives from Persian for "free tree," reflecting the belief that it is naturally free from pests and disease.

Neem should not be confused with white cedar (Melia azedarach), which is a different and toxic plant in the same family. True neem has single pinnate leaves and white flowers, while white cedar has bi-pinnate leaves and purple flowers.

Neem leaf should not be used during pregnancy or by those trying to conceive, as it has documented antifertility effects. Not recommended for children. May interact with diabetes and immunosuppressant medications. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
