Sacred lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera) produces a gentle, golden infusion with soft floral notes and a subtle sweetness. Valued for thousands of years across multiple herbal traditions, lotus flower tea is traditionally used to promote calm, support restful sleep, and ease mild nervous tension. The dried petals and stamens brew into a light, soothing cup that suits any time of day.
Key Benefits
- Calming and relaxing: Traditionally used to promote a sense of calm and ease mild nervous tension. A popular choice as an evening wind-down tea.
- Sleep support: Traditionally used to support restful sleep and settle a busy mind before bed.
- Rich in antioxidants: Contains flavonoids including kaempferol and quercetin, which may help protect cells from oxidative stress.
- Gentle on the stomach: The mild, non-acidic infusion is easy to drink and well-tolerated by most people.
- Beautiful presentation: The dried petals open gracefully in hot water, making lotus flower tea a lovely addition to a mindful tea ritual.
Lotus flower tea: Add 3 to 5 grams of dried lotus flower (roughly a tablespoon) to a cup of water heated to around 85 degrees. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, covered. The infusion can be re-steeped 2 to 3 times, with the flavour becoming more delicate with each steep.
Blending: Pairs beautifully with Chamomile for a deeply calming bedtime blend. Also lovely with Rose Petals for a floral afternoon tea, or with Passionflower for extra relaxation support.
The sacred lotus is revered across many cultures. In Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the lotus symbolises purity and spiritual awakening because it blooms clean and beautiful from muddy water. It is the national flower of both India and Vietnam.
This is sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), a different plant from blue lotus (a water lily). Sacred lotus flowers are pink to white, never blue, and the two belong to entirely separate plant families.
