Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is a certified organic herb with a long history of use in European and Chinese herbal traditions. It is one of the most well-known traditional herbs for women's health, valued for centuries as a gentle support for healthy menstrual flow. The dried herb brews into a mild, slightly peppery tea.
Key Benefits
- Menstrual support: Traditionally used to support a healthy, comfortable menstrual cycle and maintain normal menstrual flow. One of the most well-regarded shepherd's purse benefits.
- Women's tonic: A staple of traditional European herbalism for women's wellbeing, particularly during the reproductive years.
- Rich in vitamin K: Contains naturally occurring vitamin K, which plays a role in normal blood clotting.
- Gentle and mild: The light, peppery flavour makes it easy to drink as a tea or blend with other herbs.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Shepherd's purse tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. Best used during the days when support is needed most.
Blending: Traditionally paired with Yarrow for complementary support. Also blends well with Raspberry Leaf as a nourishing women's tea, or with Chamomile for a gentler, more soothing cup.
The name "shepherd's purse" comes from the plant's distinctive heart-shaped seed pods, which resemble the small leather pouches once carried by shepherds. In some parts of England, children played a game called "Mother's Heart," pulling the pods apart to reveal the tiny seeds inside.
Shepherd's purse is recognised as one of the "seven herbs of spring" in Japanese tradition (Nazuna), where it is eaten as part of the Nanakusa-no-sekku festival on 7 January. It is listed in the European Pharmacopoeia for traditional use.
