Irish Breakfast tea is a rich, malty black tea (Camellia sinensis) made from broken leaf that brews dark and fast. It's the strongest breakfast tea in our range and made for milk, so if a classic English Breakfast Tea is a little gentle for you, this is the one to try.
Key Benefits
- Our strongest breakfast cup: fuller and maltier than English Breakfast, for anyone who likes strong tea.
- Made for milk: it keeps its colour and flavour under a good splash of milk, and takes sugar or honey well.
- Quick to brew: broken leaf gives up its strength fast, so 3 to 4 minutes is enough for a dark, full cup.
- A proper morning cuppa: around half the caffeine of a cup of coffee, a little more with a long steep.
- Certified organic loose leaf: straight organic black tea, no flavourings.
Hot: Use 1 heaped teaspoon (about 2.5g) per cup of freshly boiled water, around 95 to 100°C, and steep for 3 to 4 minutes. Broken leaf brews quickly, so a longer steep adds bitterness more than strength. For a pot, it's the old rule of one heaped teaspoon per person and one for the pot.
Tea brack: Soak 450g of mixed dried fruit and 180g of brown sugar overnight in a cup of cold, strong Irish Breakfast. Stir in an egg, 250g of plain flour, half a teaspoon of bicarb soda and a teaspoon of Cinnamon Powder if you like it spiced, then bake in a lined loaf tin at 180°C for about an hour and a half, until a skewer comes out clean.
For an evening cuppa with milk and no caffeine, Rooibos Tea brews rich and red.
Irish tea drinkers rarely call it breakfast tea at all. It's just tea, and the pot goes on from breakfast right through the day.
An old Irish saying has it that a good cup should be strong enough to trot a mouse on.
Used leaves can go straight into the compost, but keep the dry leaf away from dogs and cats, as caffeine is toxic to them.
A strong brew that contains caffeine, so keep to a few cups a day if pregnant or caffeine sensitive. Tea can reduce iron absorption, so drink it between meals if your iron is low.
