Australia's field guide to edible and medicinal weeds, now in a fully updated second edition.
A lot of what we pull out of the garden is good food. Adam Grubb and Annie Raser-Rowland have been foraging for well over a decade, and this handbook brings together what they've learned: which common weeds are worth eating, how to tell them apart, and how to use them in the kitchen.
This second edition, published by CSIRO Publishing in 2025, adds more weeds, updated research, extra facts and new photos.
Inside are 22 detailed weed profiles and 14 shorter ones. Each covers the plant's edible and medicinal uses along with a bit of its history and folklore, and full-colour photos and botanical illustrations help with identification. There's also a chapter of simple recipes and another on weeds in the garden. It's a compact paperback, easy to slip into a bag on a walk.
Foraging with kids? The same authors wrote Let's Eat Weeds, a guide for young foragers.
As with any wild food, only eat a plant once you're certain what it is, and pick away from roadsides and anywhere that may have been sprayed.
