Summer in the Herb Garden
Summer is time for simple eating and herbs play a big part in adding flavour to homemade pizza, salads, pasta or vegoodle dishes. Basil is the taste and smell of summer, plants that were planted in spring can be pruned heavily and made into pesto. Add mint to fresh pineapple or watermelon to give it an extra freshness. Make herb teas and turn them into cooling iceblocks, so welcome on a hot summers day.
It is a great time to plant chillies they love the warm weather, the hot fruits add colour to the garden and spice to our meals. Try growing some of the perennial salad greens such as mushroom plant, sambung and Okinawa spinach. These herbs supply nutritious greens through the hot months when lettuce struggles in the garden.
Salvias look amazing at this time of year, so many are in flower now and the summer light really accentuates the flower colours.
Don’t forget to look after your skin at this time of year, try some of the natural calendula creams or oils to soothe dry, itchy skin. Stay hydrated, add herbs to your water for a truly healthy beverage, summer is simple.
