Agrimony is Agrimonia eupatoria, a tall meadow herb in the rose family with slender spikes of small yellow flowers, and a tea herb with a long history in Western herbalism. It brews an earthy, lightly bitter cup, and its natural tannins give it a dry finish like black tea. Certified organic.
Key Benefits
- Certified organic: grown and processed to organic certification standards.
- An everyday tea in times past: historical herbals record agrimony tea being drunk with meals for its fragrance, and brewed into country spring drinks with other herbs.
- A traditional gargle: brewed strong and left to cool, agrimony herb has long been a soothing rinse for the mouth and throat.
- Traditionally taken for an unsettled stomach: a gentle cup for when digestion feels a bit out of sorts.
- Caffeine free: fine to drink at any time of day.
For a cup of agrimony tea, use 1 to 2 heaped teaspoons of dried agrimony per 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. The longer it steeps, the drier and more bitter it gets, so start at 5 minutes and adjust. Two or three cups a day is the traditional amount.
On its own it can taste a little austere, so it's often blended. A pinch of Peppermint or Lemon Balm Tea brightens it, and it sits well with Meadowsweet and Raspberry Leaf, two more tea herbs from the rose family.
To use it as a gargle, steep 2 teaspoons in 150 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, strain and let it cool to lukewarm.
The country names for common agrimony describe the plant well. Church steeples refers to the tall, narrow flower spikes, and sticklewort to the small hooked burrs that follow, which cling to socks and dogs' coats. The flowers carry a faint scent of apricots.
A medieval rhyme claimed that a sprig of agrimony tucked under a sleeper's head would keep them asleep until someone took it away.
It's no relation to hemp agrimony, a daisy-family plant that shares part of the name but is a different herb altogether and not one for the teapot.
Not recommended in pregnancy, while breastfeeding or for children under 12. Agrimony is high in tannins, so drink it at least an hour apart from iron supplements and medicines.
