Arjuna bark powder is milled from the bark of Terminalia arjuna, a tall riverbank tree named in the Charaka Samhita and used in Ayurvedic tradition ever since. It is mildly astringent and faintly bitter, and is almost always simmered into warm milk rather than brewed as a tea. Certified organic.

Key Benefits

  • A classic Ayurvedic bark: recorded roughly two thousand years ago and used steadily by Ayurvedic practitioners since.
  • Traditionally a heart tonic: arjuna is the bark Ayurveda reaches for when the subject is the heart and circulation.
  • Milled ready to use: the bark is hard, fibrous work to grind at home, and the powder stirs straight into hot milk.
  • Certified organic: grown and processed to organic certification standards.
  • Gently astringent: a clean, drying, faintly bitter taste that milk and a little honey round out nicely.
  • Collected without felling: arjuna sheds its outer bark once a year, so it can be gathered without cutting the tree down.

The traditional preparation is ksheerapaka, bark simmered in milk. Stir half to one teaspoon of the powder into a cup of milk or water, bring it gently to a simmer for three or four minutes, then take it off the heat and sweeten with a little honey or jaggery. Once a day, morning or evening, is the usual pattern. Straining it through a fine sieve gives a smoother cup.

It is often set alongside Hawthorn Berry Powder, the Western herb with much the same reputation, and sits comfortably with Ashwagandha Powder or Brahmi in an Ayurvedic routine.

The tree takes its name from Arjuna of the Mahabharata. Older texts call it partha and kakubha, and the bark itself appears as marudah.

Arjuna leaves are used to rear tasar silkworms, so the same tree has long carried two harvests: bark for the apothecary, leaves for the silk.

The bark is unusually high in tannins. That is why it puckers the mouth, and why it was once used for tanning hides as well.

Arjuna may lower blood pressure and can interact with heart, blood pressure and blood-thinning medication. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
