Camu camu powder is milled from the small, sharply sour berry of Myrciaria dubia, one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C of any fruit. It is properly tart, closer to sherbet than to fruit juice, so a quarter teaspoon in a smoothie is usually plenty. Certified organic.
Key Benefits
- Certified organic: grown and processed to organic certification standards.
- Naturally high in vitamin C: among the highest of any fruit, and it arrives with the berry's own colour compounds rather than on its own.
- Sharp and bright: a sherbet lift for smoothies, yoghurt and sparkling water.
- A little goes a long way: a quarter to half a teaspoon is a normal serve, so even a small bag lasts.
- Fine powder: stirs straight into cold drinks, with no soaking or brewing.
Stir a quarter to half a teaspoon into a smoothie, juice, yoghurt or a glass of water. The tartness works best against something sweet, so banana, mango or apple juice carry it well. Start at the lower end, since too much makes a drink unpleasantly sour.
Keep it cold. Vitamin C breaks down with heat, so camu camu powder goes into food after the cooking is done rather than into a hot brew or a baking mix. For more of the same sharp fruit character, Kakadu Plum Powder is the Australian native equivalent, and Rose Hip or Hibiscus Tea bring a similar tang to a brewed cup.
The shrub grows out on river flats and spends months of the year standing in floodwater, fruiting once the water drops away again.
The berries are about the size of a grape and far too sour to eat off the bush, which is exactly why the fruit is nearly always dried and milled.
It belongs to the myrtle family, which makes it a distant relation of lilly pilly and lemon myrtle.
Large amounts can upset the stomach, so keep the serve small. Check with your doctor first if you have haemochromatosis, as vitamin C increases iron absorption.
