Chlorella powder is a single celled freshwater algae, Chlorella vulgaris, dried and milled to a fine deep green powder. It is around half protein by weight, with all the essential amino acids present, plus iron, magnesium and a lot of chlorophyll. The flavour is bold and savoury, so most people blend it rather than drink it straight.

Start with half a teaspoon a day for the first week, then build up. A typical serve is one to two teaspoons, roughly 3 to 6g, stirred into cold water or juice or blended into a smoothie. Cold liquid mixes far better than hot, and it sits more comfortably taken with food. Some bloating in the first few days is common and usually settles.
The flavour is strongly green and faintly oceanic, so pair it with something sweet or sharp. Banana, apple juice or a squeeze of citrus all cover it well. Moringa Leaf Powder is a milder green to blend alongside it, and Kakadu Plum Powder adds vitamin C and a good tartness. If you would rather drink your minerals, Nettle Leaf Tea is the gentler route.
Chlorella was named in 1890, from the Greek for green and the Latin for small. It is one of the oldest single celled plants on earth and has barely changed in the fossil record.
After the Second World War it was seriously investigated as a large scale protein crop, with research programmes running for years on the idea of growing it in tanks to feed cities.
Its cell wall is tough cellulose that we cannot digest, so good chlorella powder is processed to break that wall open. That step is the difference between a useful powder and an expensive green dye.
Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which matters if you take blood thinning medication. Start at a small dose, as bloating or loose stools are common in the first few days.
