Burdock root from Arctium lappa is one of the most widely used roots in Western and East Asian herbalism, traditionally valued for supporting healthy skin and the body's natural detoxification processes. Rich in inulin (a prebiotic fibre), chlorogenic acid, and arctigenin, dried burdock root makes an earthy, mildly sweet burdock tea that has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries.

Key Benefits

  • Skin support: One of the best-known burdock root benefits. Traditionally used to support clear, healthy skin from the inside out.
  • Digestive health: The root is naturally high in inulin, a prebiotic fibre that may support healthy gut bacteria and normal digestive function.
  • Natural cleansing: Traditionally used in Western herbalism as a gentle depurative to support the body's natural cleansing and elimination processes.
  • Antioxidant activity: Contains chlorogenic acid, quercetin, luteolin, and arctigenin, which contribute antioxidant activity.
  • Nutritive root: A source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and iron, along with small amounts of B-group vitamins.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried burdock root to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink warm or cold. The tea keeps in the fridge for up to 48 hours. For a classic combination, blend with Dandelion Root Tea for the traditional dandelion and burdock duo.

Blended tea: Burdock root pairs beautifully with Licorice Root Tea to add natural sweetness, or with Nettle Leaf Tea for a mineral-rich, nourishing brew. Some customers enjoy it blended with elderberry and ginger for a warming daily tonic.

Culinary use: In Japanese cuisine, burdock root (gobo) is a common ingredient. Rehydrate dried root by soaking in warm water, then add to soups, stir-fries, or stews for earthy depth.

The hooked burrs of the burdock plant famously inspired Swiss engineer George de Mestral to invent Velcro in the 1940s after noticing them stuck to his dog's fur during a walk.

The cut dried root sometimes appears "cobwebby" or fibrous. This is completely normal and comes from the inner pith of the root, which can be very stringy when dried.

Burdock root is generally considered safe for dogs in small amounts and is sometimes included in canine herbal supplements. However, always consult a vet before giving herbs to pets.
