Chaparral leaf powder (Larrea tridentata) is a finely ground form of the traditional creosote bush herb from the American Southwest. This chaparral powder offers the same traditional properties as the whole leaf in a convenient powder form that mixes easily into poultices, topical preparations, and herbal formulations. The powder has a distinctive resinous aroma and contains NDGA, a potent natural antioxidant.

Key Benefits

  • Convenient powder form: Mixes easily into poultices, topical preparations, and formulations without the need for grinding or chopping.
  • Traditional external use: Traditionally used in Native American herbal practice as a poultice and skin wash. The fine powder creates smooth, even preparations.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Contains NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid), one of the most potent natural antioxidant compounds identified.
  • Versatile preparation: Suitable for tea, poultices, infused oils, and topical blends.

Poultice: Mix chaparral leaf powder with warm water to form a paste. Apply to clean skin wrapped in muslin for 15 to 30 minutes. Combine with Calendula Petals for a soothing topical blend.

Tea: Add half a teaspoon of chaparral powder to a cup of boiling water. Steep 10 minutes, strain through a fine cloth or tea filter. The taste is strongly bitter and resinous. Not for daily long-term use.

Infused oil: Stir powder into warm carrier oil and heat gently in a double boiler for 2 to 3 hours. Strain through fine muslin. Combine with Lavender for a more pleasant topical oil.

The name "creosote bush" comes from the plant's distinctive smell, which resembles coal tar creosote, especially noticeable after rain in the desert. Native American peoples of the Southwest valued this plant highly and used it in steam baths and as a fumigant.

The FDA has issued consumer advisories regarding internal use of chaparral. This herb should be used with caution and is not suitable for long-term internal consumption.

Chaparral has been associated with liver and kidney damage in some reported cases. Do not use internally for prolonged periods. Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for people with liver or kidney conditions. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
