Couch grass (Agropyron repens) is a gentle, soothing herb traditionally used to support healthy urinary tract and kidney function. This certified organic couch grass rhizome, also known as twitch grass or dog grass, has a mild, slightly sweet flavour and has been valued in European herbal medicine for centuries. As a dried rhizome, couch grass tea needs simmering (decoction) to extract its beneficial compounds.
Key Benefits
- Urinary tract support: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy urinary tract function and promote comfortable urination. Recognised by the European Medicines Agency for this traditional use.
- Gentle natural diuretic: Traditionally used to support healthy fluid balance and promote the body's natural elimination processes. A gentle, soothing diuretic suitable for sensitive systems.
- Kidney support: Traditionally used to support healthy kidney function. Often included in European kidney tea blends alongside birch leaf and nettle.
- Certified organic: Sourced from certified organic couch grass, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Decoction: Add 2 teaspoons of dried couch grass rhizome to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. The flavour is mild and slightly sweet. Best consumed earlier in the day.
Kidney blend: Simmer couch grass with Birch Leaf and Dandelion Leaf for a traditional European kidney support tea. Add Marshmallow Root for extra soothing quality.
Cold infusion: Place 2 tablespoons in cold water overnight. Strain in the morning and gently warm before drinking. Cold infusion extracts more of the mucilage content.
If you have a garden, you probably know couch grass as a persistent lawn weed. The very rhizomes that make it so hard to remove from garden beds are the medicinal part used in herbal medicine. Dogs and cats will instinctively seek out and eat couch grass when they feel unwell, which is why it is also known as "dog grass."
During times of famine in Europe, couch grass rhizomes were dried and ground into flour for bread-making. The rhizomes contain enough starch and natural sugars to serve as an emergency food source.
