Elecampane root (Inula helenium) is a warming, aromatic herb traditionally used to support healthy respiratory function and soothe coughs. This dried elecampane root is rich in inulin (a natural prebiotic fibre) and has a distinctive warm, slightly bitter, camphor-like flavour. As a root herb, elecampane needs simmering into a decoction rather than steeping as a tea.
Key Benefits
- Respiratory support: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support healthy lung and respiratory function. One of the most valued herbs for winter wellness and cough relief.
- Cough relief: Traditionally used as a warming expectorant to help relieve productive coughs and support clear breathing. Pairs well with other respiratory herbs.
- Rich in inulin: Elecampane root contains up to 44% inulin, a natural prebiotic fibre that may support healthy gut flora. This gives the root a slightly sweet undertone.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used as a warming bitter to support healthy digestive function, particularly after heavy meals.
Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried elecampane root to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is warming, slightly bitter, and aromatic. Add honey to taste.
Respiratory blend: Simmer elecampane root with Ginger Root for warmth, then add Thyme or Peppermint after removing from heat for a classic winter wellness tea.
Tincture: Pack a jar one-third full with chopped elecampane root and cover with vodka (40% alcohol). Seal and store in a dark place for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle.
The name "elecampane" derives from Inula and campana (of the fields). In Greek mythology, the plant was said to have sprung from the tears of Helen of Troy, giving it the species name helenium. In Anglo-Saxon England, elecampane was one of the sacred healing herbs.
Elecampane root was historically made into lozenges and candies, sold in London apothecaries as "elf dock sweets" for coughs and chest complaints. The root's high inulin content gives it a slight natural sweetness.
People with allergies to the daisy family (Asteraceae) should avoid elecampane. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
