Iceland moss (Cetraria islandica), also known as icelandic moss, is a traditional Scandinavian remedy for coughs, sore throats, and respiratory comfort. Despite its name, iceland moss is not a true moss but a lichen, a unique organism that combines fungal and algal elements. This dried lichen produces a thick, soothing iceland moss tea that coats and calms irritated throats and airways. Iceland moss has been used in Nordic herbal medicine for centuries and is approved by the German Commission E for coughs and throat irritation.

Key Benefits

  • Respiratory comfort: Traditionally used in Scandinavian and European herbal medicine to soothe coughs and support respiratory comfort. The thick, mucilaginous tea coats and calms irritated airways.
  • Sore throat relief: Traditionally used to soothe sore, dry, and irritated throats. The high polysaccharide content creates a protective, soothing layer on mucous membranes.
  • Digestive support: Also traditionally used as a bitter tonic to support healthy digestive function and appetite. Contains both soothing mucilage and stimulating bitter compounds.
  • Commission E approved: One of the few herbal remedies formally approved by the German Commission E for coughs and inflammation of the mouth and throat.

Soothing tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried iceland moss to a cup of cold water. Slowly bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. The tea will be thick and mucilaginous. Add honey and lemon for a soothing winter drink.

Throat blend: Combine iceland moss with Marshmallow Root for extra soothing, and Licorice Root for natural sweetness. Add Thyme for respiratory support.

Cold soak (less bitter): Soak iceland moss in cold water for 1 to 2 hours. Discard the water (which removes some bitter acids), then simmer the softened lichen in fresh water for 10 minutes for a milder, sweeter tea.

Iceland moss is a lichen, not a moss or a plant. Lichens are a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga. They grow extremely slowly (just a few millimetres per year) and are sensitive to air pollution, which is why they are used as environmental quality indicators.

During periods of famine in Iceland and Scandinavia, iceland moss was dried, ground into flour, and used to make bread and porridge. Its high polysaccharide content made it a valuable survival food, though the bitter acids had to be soaked out first.
