Mistletoe tea (Viscum album) is made from the dried leaf and stem of European mistletoe, one of the most historically significant herbs in Western herbal tradition. This wildcrafted herb produces a mild, slightly bitter infusion that has been valued in European herbalism for centuries. Traditionally used to support cardiovascular wellbeing and as a calming herbal tea, mistletoe has a rich cultural heritage stretching back to the Druids, who considered it sacred.
Key Benefits
- Traditional European herb: One of the most revered plants in European herbalism, with documented use spanning over 2,000 years across Greek, Roman, Celtic, and Germanic traditions.
- Cardiovascular tradition: Traditionally used in European herbal practice to support a healthy circulatory system. Often paired with hawthorn berry in traditional formulas.
- Calming herbal tea: Traditionally valued as a gentle nervine herb, used to support relaxation and ease mild nervous tension.
- Wildcrafted: Harvested from naturally occurring populations. As a hemiparasitic plant that grows on host trees, mistletoe cannot be conventionally cultivated.
- Rich phytochemistry: Contains over 250 identified compounds including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and triterpenes.
Hot infusion: Add 1 teaspoon of dried mistletoe to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain. Enjoy up to two cups daily.
Cold infusion (traditional method): Add 2 teaspoons to a cup of cold water and steep overnight (8 to 12 hours). Strain and drink in the morning. This traditional European method extracts a different balance of compounds compared to hot water.
Blending: Pairs well with Hawthorn Berry for a traditional cardiovascular support blend. Also complements Lime Flower for a gentle, calming evening tea, or try with Rose Hip to add a fruity note that offsets the mild bitterness.
The Druids considered mistletoe the most sacred of all plants, particularly when found growing on oak. Pliny the Elder described their ritual of cutting it with a golden sickle on the sixth night of the new moon after the winter solstice. They called it "All-Heal," a name that endured for centuries.
In Norse mythology, mistletoe played a central role in the story of Baldur, the god of light. The kissing tradition we know today only dates to 18th-century England, where custom required a berry to be picked with each kiss, and when all berries were gone, the kissing stopped.
