Pau d arco tea (Tabebuia avellanedae) is a traditional bark tea that has been used for centuries in traditional herbalism to support immune function and general wellbeing. The inner bark of the pau d arco tree, also known as taheebo tea or lapacho tea, produces a smooth, slightly woody decoction with a mild, earthy flavour. Pau d arco benefits include its rich content of lapachol and beta-lapachone, naturally occurring compounds that have attracted significant research interest.
Key Benefits
- Immune support: Traditionally used to support healthy immune system function and the body's natural defences. One of the most valued pau d arco benefits.
- General wellbeing: Traditionally used as a tonic to support overall vitality and resilience. A staple of traditional herbal practice.
- Rich in bioactive compounds: Pau d arco bark contains lapachol and beta-lapachone, naphthoquinone compounds unique to this species.
- Smooth flavour: Produces a pleasant, mildly earthy decoction with a smooth, slightly woody finish. Easy to drink daily.
- Versatile preparation: Best prepared as a simmered decoction. Also suitable for tincture making and blending with other herbs.
Pau d arco tea (decoction): Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of pau d arco bark to 4 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink 1 to 3 cups daily. The bark requires simmering rather than steeping to release its beneficial compounds.
Blending: For an immune-supportive blend, combine with Echinacea Root or Elderberries. To soften the flavour, add a teaspoon of Licorice Root, which adds natural sweetness.
The name "pau d arco" translates roughly as "bow stick" or "bow wood," referring to the traditional use of the extremely hard wood for making hunting bows. The tree can grow up to 30 metres tall and produces striking pink or purple trumpet-shaped flowers.
Pau d arco bark is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats in the small amounts found in herbal preparations. However, as with all herbs, introduce gradually and consult a veterinarian if unsure.
